My Wesley Story

Seven years ago I moved to Cambridge, and having been involved with Westminster United in Waterloo, I was looking for a new church home that is similar/and also affirming. One of the things I noticed when I first came to Wesley was the rainbow flag sticker onto the window and on the front street sign. Early on I had realized that Wesley is not similar [to Westminster]; but in its own way, I found the people here at Wesley to be kind, welcoming and friendly.

By fall time, [a church leader] approached me to take part in a seminar workshop called “Living the Hope.” I thought… I’m so new to Wesley, why me? Digging deeper into congregational welcome? What is Emerging Spirit? After listening to the leaders and speakers, and to stories from other workshop participants, I felt really blessed. The United Church is doing good work, and engaging people that have a heart (compassion and understanding) for other ordinary people. Through that experience and the months to follow, which led me to get to know “the people” at Wesley, I found out that the people are very committed, loyal and genuine.

I trust that over the next weeks, months, and years that we/us the people at Wesley will listen to the voice of God and move us in a direction that will help us to reach out to new people to join us and to grow with us. Not in our own strength, but by relying on the strength from God it will be possible. 1 Corinthians 1:8… “He will keep you strong to the end…”. Let us move on together and rejoice in what God has to offer us; and I’m thankful that I can be a part of that journey.
