“We the United Church of Canada extend our sincerest apology to…”

I was there in McLeod-Stewarton United Church in downtown Ottawa when people congregated in the sanctuary to argue about the issue of gay ordination and acceptance of LGBTQ2 people into the Church. The bigots were extra loud in their proclamations of horror and it got so bad that I could not stand hearing them, so I left in the middle of the so-called debate. I cannot remember if I ever went back, I think not. We moved from that neighbourhood after that and didn’t go to church until my husband went to Rideau Park United after our move. It is painful to even think of that era. It’s amazing that I have received so much comfort being at Rideau Park United, for so many years after such a horrible beginning in the United Church.

I think the church should apologie to the LGBTQ2 community for all the past indignities—that’s not much, but is better than nothing.

“We the United Church of Canada extend our sincerest apology to all the LGBTQ2 people we have hurt for so many years. We ask for your forgiveness.”
