Because of my church I was prepared to welcome my trans grandchild

May 8, 2018

Kai, I have heard your story and it broke my heart. I have one grandchild who was identified as a boy from birth. During the past few years there has been a struggle. He is very smart but did not seem to be interested in school or in any activities—spent a lot of time alone. This child lives in Toronto with his Mom. His dad (my son) passed away eleven years ago.

Last year I got a call from him and during our conversation he told me that he is “trans”. Suddently a lightbulb when off—“Oh! This is the reason for all the problems!” What an enormous, internal struggle he was going through—all on his own. Now he is out/open talking about it, getting help — what a difference it made.

When he told me he was “trans” I asked him to send me a picture of himself/herself.

He now has a new name, is a beautiful young woman and last year, for the first time we sent a birthday card to our granddaughter.

We now have a renewed relationship.

Why did my heart break when I heard your story? Because although we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go. My work with the church over the years prepared me to help my grandchild.
