I opened my home as a Safe Space…

content warning: violence

In the early to mid 90’s, I opened my home as a Safe Space of LGBT youth who were not safe in their own homes and/or communities. I thought I knew what I was getting into, but didn’t appreciate the profound impact they would have on me.

One young man came from South America. He left home because homosexuality was a crime in his country. He told stories of the police picking him up, taking him to the country, stripping and beating him and then leaving him to find his way home, naked. His family were Roman Catholic and believed he was an ‘abomination’. He also believed that was what God thought. I wish I had had better words to help him see himself differently in God’s presence.
