The decision was a 'no' vote

I was there in 1988 and I remember…

a congregational vote meant to send our delegates off with our decision — a vote to basically tell them how to vote on our behalf. The decision was a “No” vote, by a large margin, as I recall. I remember being disappointed, but not surprised. I was proud of what the United Church was proposing and discouraged that my local church didn’t see things the same way.

I never discussed how I felt with anyone from the congregation, including my mininster. I resolved to wait and pray that someday things would be different.

I was elated when General Council approved the ordination of gays and lesbians. I was proud of our denomination—for its foresight and courage, and yes, maybe a bit vindictive—take that St. Andrews!
