Frustrations in my church
I remember in 2002 my congregation made the decision not to marry same-sex couples when I was a teen. My family left the church for a period of several years until they reversed that decision. Even today (12 years later) I’m still running into opposition with becoming Affirming — we have marched in Pride parades, we have several openly gay/lesbian members and recently put a (small) rainbow flag on our sign. Yet I’ve had several church members tell me they don’t want us to be seen as “the gay church” and several people are against even forming a committee to explore the option of becoming an Affirming congregation. This is in 2018.
