How can we learn from the past to grow in understanding and respect?
I read the “November 1988” story as well as several others that made me realize how though we see ourselves (the UCC) as a progressive, inclusive church, we are full of terrible conflict.
A common thought that surfaced from these stories was how there seems to be constant conflict. With every serious issue there is loss before gain… or steps backwards before moving forward. Sacrifice before or at the cost of progress.
How can we learn from the past to grow in understanding and respect?
Change is constant. Change takes time. Can we be more open to sharing and wanting to learn views different from our own? How can we strive to be open, welcoming, progressive without causing harm to others? How do we respect other views without harming ourselves? How to share thoughts, to offer understanding? Be mindful, not judgemental.
