I was told I would go to hell for saying God loved us all
I was there in 1988 and I remember the anger, the challenges, the disrespect on both sides of the issue. I did not leave the United Church as a whole but did leave my home church which was anti- to the change. I was blessed to be welcomed with open arms into another United Church congregation.
The years have passed but I can still feel the hurtful and angry words of folks in my congregation who said I was going to hell for supporting that we are all loved in God’s world.
I’m sorry that all LGBTQ folks and allies were—and in some situations still are—treated so horrifically. I hope and pray that some day it will be a safe place for all to be in community together whoever and whatever we are.
My commitment is to listen more, judge less and forgive self and others when we fall off of our perceived perfect-person stool.
